What causes it?
Cause:
- It is found in the 15.5th region of the short arm of the human chromosome 11.
- Hemoglobin is a protein in the "dimple" of red blood cells that transports oxygen through the body.
Sickle hemoglobin is hemoglobin S.
- This mutation in the gene tells the body to produce hemoglobin which gives red blood cells their 'sickle' shape.
Sickle Cell Anemia:
- Anemia is when you don't have enough red blood cells or hemoglobin.
- Sickle Cell Anemia is one of the most common forms of Sickle Cell Disease.
