How is it inherited?
Inheritance:
- It is an autosomal recessive genetic blood inherited disorder.
- Sickle-cell disease affects people who inherit two copies of the gene that makes the altered hemoglobin.
- People who receive a gene for sickle cell disease from 1 parent and a normal gene from the other has a condition called “sickle cell trait”.
Different Common Forms of Sickle Cell:
There are four main types of sickle cell disease:
Offspring is heterozygous for sickle cell disease.
Hemoglobin S is inherited from one parent and the beta thalassemia gene is inherited from the other parent.
- Hemoglobin SS
- Hemoglobin SC
Offspring is heterozygous for sickle cell disease.
- Sickle Cell Thalassemia
Hemoglobin S is inherited from one parent and the beta thalassemia gene is inherited from the other parent.
