These are some interesting facts about Sickle Cell Disease:
- Sickle Cell Disease was founded by James Bryan Herrick
- Sickle Cell Disease is related to malaria and is mostly found in Africa, India and south/central America. Causing families from those countries to have sickle cell disease.
- It is believed that people who carry the sickle cell trait are less likely to have severe forms of malaria.
- People with the Sickle Cell "trait" are also effected. It causes low oxygen levels and dehydration.
- Healthy normal red blood cells live up to 120 days. Sickle cells live for only 10 to 20 days.
- September is National Sickle Cell month.
